The Acting Head of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, His Excellency Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, met and held discussions with the Head of the Afghanistan Humanitarian Group, Mr. Alastair James Burnett and the UK’s Humanitarian Aid Economic and Humanitarian Affairs Expert, Mr. Mutomi Mwingiroa Gichara.
At the outset, His Excellency Alhaj Turabi Sahb welcomed the guests and highlighted the negative impacts of climate change, particularly in Afghanistan. He noted that Afghanistan is among the regions most vulnerable to natural disasters, especially sudden floods and widespread droughts.
The Acting Head of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authorit emphasized the need to facilitate the work of UN agencies and other humanitarian organizations, ensuring complete transparency and greater coordination in the aid distribution process. He proposed that humanitarian aid should be tailored to the real needs of the people and, where possible, sourced from local resources, national markets, or nearby regional markets to simplify the transfer process and reduce costs.
His Excellency Alhaj Turabi Sahb mentioned small-scale emergency prevention projects across the country but stressed the need for more preventive initiatives. He called for serious support in implementing protective walls, small dams and other developmental projects.
Additionally, His Excellency Mullah Nooruddin Turabi addressed the issue of the large-scale return of migrants from neighboring countries, urging prompt and effective attention to the needs of this vulnerable group.
He emphasized that the activities of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authorit are non-political, with services directed solely to the most deserving and affected communities. Therefore, humanitarian aid should not become a victim of political interactions. He called on the international community to engage in genuine and sustained cooperation with the Authority in managing natural disasters.
In response, Mr. Alastair James Burnett expressed gratitude for the Authority’s cooperation, stating that many international partner organizations are fully satisfied with the Authority’s positive engagement, swift actions, and facilitation. He pledged that the UK would continue its support not only in the humanitarian sector but also in the implementation of preventive and developmental projects.
In conclusion, both sides stressed the need to strengthen cooperation and coordination, particularly with the United Nations. They emphasized joint commitments to implementing preventive projects, establishing search and rescue teams, and providing advanced equipment for emergency situations.
