UNICEF has been working continuously in Afghanistan since 1949, making the organization one of the longest-serving international supporters to the country. Over the past 60 years UNICEF has promoted the rights of children and women throughout Afghanistan and worked to bring basic services, including education, health, Nutrition, protection, water and sanitation and hygiene to those who are most in need. By equipping and empowering communities to develop the inherent potential and resources of the country, the international community has an opportunity to promote peace and stability in Afghanistan. IOM’s mission in Afghanistan was established in 1992 and has enjoyed 21-years of uninterrupted presence in the country. IOM Afghanistan is one of the largest IOM mission worldwide, with expenditures in 2010 reaching over USD 70 million.It is currently implementing various projects across the country through its offices in Kabul,Badakhshan, Balkh, Bamyan, Herat, Kandahar,Kunduz, Nangarhar and Paktia. IOM is the deputy of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Relief Item (NFI) Cluster in Afghanistan.IOM also leads the inter-agency Task Force for Natural Disaster-Induced Internally
Displaced People (IDPs.) It is also an active member of the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT), and works closely with partner agencies including UNHCR and UNOCHA. |
