A Practical Training Program and Drill on Search, Rescue, and First Aid During Avalanche Incidents was Conducted in Southern Salang
Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation for Habitat, conducted a training and exercise program on search and rescue during avalanches in Southern Salang, Parwan Province. The program aimed to enhance preparedness levels against natural disasters and improve the capabilities of staff members.
The program involved 40 personnel from the central authority and the provinces of Kapisa, Panjsher and Parwan, as well as workforce members from the Directorate of Maintenance and Monitoring of the Salang Passes.
The three-day program featured theoretical sessions on the first two days, where technical experts and trainers in rescue operations presented lessons to participants on identifying avalanche risks, personal safety methods, principles of search and rescue, proper use of rescue equipment, and provision of first aid.
On the third day, practical exercises were carried out in the Gawarah Sang area near Southern Salang, allowing participants to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.
During the practical exercises, simulated avalanche incidents were created, and participants practiced extracting, transporting, and providing emergency first aid to individuals trapped under snow. They also gained hands-on experience in team coordination and incident scene management. These exercises play a crucial role in enhancing the practical skills of the responsible forces along the Salang route—a highway that witnesses severe avalanches and adverse incidents every winter season.
Furthermore, participants in this training program, along with the workforce of the Directorate of Maintenance and Monitoring of the Salang Passes, described such trainings as effective and requested that similar programs be organized for other personnel and teams of the mentioned directorate.
