ABOUT ANDMA
History of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority - ANDMA
ANDMA was established following a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly in response to the widespread natural disasters of the 1960s and 1970s, which resulted in millions of casualties and billions of dollars in financial losses. Subsequently, on May 4th, 1972, based on a decree from the Afghan government at the time, this authority was founded within the framework of the Prime Minister’s Office to respond to natural disasters and provide assistance to affected populations.
In 2004, the authority expanded its operations by establishing regional offices in seven zones across the country. Later, in 2009, pursuant to a government directive, provincial offices were officially inaugurated in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan, marking a significant milestone in its nationwide presence.
Since its inception, ANDMA has played a vital role in reducing the risks of natural disasters, enhancing preparedness and coordinating effective responses. It remains a cornerstone institution in Afghanistan, particularly during emergency situations and continues to be recognized as a critical entity in the country’s disaster management efforts.
