Today, on Monday in morning, under the directives of the high authority of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the process of closing fuel tanks and pump stations that failed to comply with fire prevention safety standards began. This operation was carried out by the Permanent Fire Prevention Committee, in the presence of representatives from the Directorate of Affairs, Kabul Municipality, the General Directorate of Fire Services under the Ministry of Interior, the Oil and Gas Authority, the Ministry of Urban Development, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Afghan National Insurance Company, the Chamber of Commerce and Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority.
Mullah Noor Mohammad Badri, Head of Risk Reduction and Prevention at Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, stated during the operation that fuel tanks and pump stations not adhering to specific procedures and checklists would be shut down today. He urged all pump station owners to implement the precautionary measures previously shared with them to ensure the safety of their lives and property.
Additionally, Engineer Esmatullah Ansar, an authorized representative of Kabul Municipality and a member of the Permanent Fire Prevention Committee, noted that the committee was established approximately one and a half years ago on the instructions of the high authority of the Prime Minister’s Office. To date, it has submitted a report on 155 fuel tanks and pump stations to the leadership of the Islamic Emirate. Of these, 89 have been approved for closure by the leadership due to their non-compliance with standards.
Furthermore, Haji Amin Amini, a representative of the General Directorate of Fire Services and Disaster Response, emphasized that the committee’s purpose is to implement preventive measures against fires and to protect people’s lives, property, and national assets.
It is worth mentioning that the Permanent Fire Prevention Committee has so far distributed checklists to 370 fuel tanks and pump stations. Of these, 55 have been evaluated, with 1 deemed fully compliant, 31 partially compliant, 6 semi-compliant, and 17 non-compliant.
In conclusion, the Permanent Fire Prevention Committee announced that the process of evaluating and closing fuel tanks and pump stations will continue nationwide to prevent fires. This is critical as fire incidents occur daily in the capital and provinces, primarily due to the failure of commercial centers, fuel tanks, and pump station owners to adhere to safety protocols.
