Today in morning, the Acting Head of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, His Excellency Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, met at his office with the Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Mr. John Aylieff, along with the WFP’s Head of Communications, Mr. Ashraf Baloch, and Deputy Head of Communications, Mr. Hamidullah Afghan, for discussions.
At the outset of the meeting, His Excellency Mullah Nooruddin Turabi welcomed the high-level WFP delegation and expressed gratitude for the organization’s efforts in reaching out to Afghanistan’s needy population, particularly those affected by natural disasters, through cooperation and humanitarian assistance.
His Excellency emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination and expanding bilateral cooperation between ANDMA and WFP, noting that such collaboration is vital for the effective implementation of humanitarian and preventive programs. He highlighted that global climate change has adversely impacted Afghanistan, leading to droughts, floods and other natural disasters that have caused significant loss of life and property for the Afghan people.
The Acting Head ANDMA also mentioned the development of a database identifying high-risk areas across the country and urged the WFP to prioritize the implementation of preventive projects. He proposed the construction of retaining walls, small water diversion dams and other protective infrastructure to effectively mitigate potential future threats.
Additionally, His Excellency addressed the situation of Afghan returnees deported from neighboring countries, noting the programs and facilities established at the Torkham, Islam Qala, and Milak borders of Nemroz Province to support these returnees. He called for increased cooperation from the WFP in this regard.
He further stated that ANDMA has provided all necessary facilities to support the operations of international organizations and strives to ensure timely coordination and action. He urged partner organizations to prioritize efficiency and transparency in implementing their programs.
In response, Mr. John Aylieff, the WFP Country Director in Afghanistan, expressed appreciation for the NDMA’s cooperation and support, reaffirming the WFP’s full commitment to continuing its assistance and coordination with the authority. He noted that the current security environment has facilitated effective program implementation, and the WFP is dedicated to carrying out its activities in full alignment with local institutions.
Mr. Aylieff explained that the WFP operates on two main pillars—emergency and developmental assistance—and pledged to share ANDMA’s identified needs and priorities with international donor organizations to secure support for implementing developmental and preventive projects.
In conclusion, both parties emphasized the importance of further strengthening coordination, expanding technical and humanitarian cooperation, and mobilizing financial resources for preventive programs and addressing the needs of returnees. They reaffirmed their commitment to these objectives.
