On Tuesday afternoon, Alhaj Mulla Nooruddin Turabi, The Acting Head of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority, met at his office with Dr. Najmuddin Najm, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Foundation in Afghanistan, Rahatullah Baig, Executive Director of the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Abdul Zia Noori, Deputy of the Aga Khan Foundation and Esmatullah Esmati, Legal and Communications Advisor of the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat. The meeting focused on discussions regarding disaster management.
Welcoming the Ambassador of the Aga Khan Foundation in Afghanistan and his accompanying delegation, Alhaj Turabi Sahb stated that climate change has impacted the entire world, and Afghanistan is no exception. These changes have led to an increase in natural disasters such as floods, avalanches, and other natural incidents in the country.
He further noted that, in addition to natural disasters, non-natural events such as fires and the forced return of migrants have also affected the Afghan people. The IEA has mobilized all available resources to manage disasters and address migrant affairs; however, these resources are insufficient and cooperation from aid organizations and institutions is needed.
Alhaj Turabi Sahb also referred to the directive of the Amir al-Mu'minin to implement preventive projects with a budget of up to one million Afghanis in each province, urging all institutions to actively participate in these humanitarian and foundational projects. He highlighted the establishment of a standard camp for 400 families in Torkham and requested the Aga Khan Foundation’s cooperation in supporting migrants.
In response, Dr. Najmuddin Najm, Ambassador of the Aga Khan Foundation, expressed gratitude for Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority’s support for national and international institutions. He noted that a joint technical committee has been established between the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat and the Authority and they are ready to cooperate fully in disaster management.
Dr. Najm also outlined the Aga Khan Foundation’s activities in various sectors, mentioning that, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank, a significant project on disaster management is underway. Once finalized, this project will significantly enhance the country’s capacity to manage disasters.
In conclusion, both sides emphasized the continuation of coordination and cooperation in disaster management and addressing the needs of migrants.
